How custom embroidery works

A few things decide how a design looks in thread and what it costs, whatever it's stitched on.

  • DigitizingYour art gets turned into a stitch file that tells the machine where every stitch goes, in what order, and how dense. A well built file is the difference between a crisp logo and a puckered one.
  • Stitch countBigger designs and solid fills mean more stitches, and more stitches mean more machine time. It's the main driver of price.
  • Thread colorsEach color is a thread change. Fewer colors keep a design clean and the cost down.
  • Size and detailThin lines and small text don't hold up in thread. Good embroidery art is drawn bolder and simpler than print art.
  • Embroidery or patchStitched directly into the item, or made as a patch and sewn on. Detailed or multi color designs often read better as a patch.

An art studio running the machine

Handshucked is an art and apparel studio that started in Key West, with a studio gallery at 803 Whitehead Street and a 60 foot mural on the island. The GNV Studio brings that same design work to embroidery in Gainesville.

Every design gets looked at by someone who draws for a living before it goes near a machine. If it won't hold up in thread, we change the art, not your expectations.

How much does custom embroidery cost?

Cost comes down to stitch count, number of thread colors, quantity, and a one time setup to turn your design into a stitch file. Hat projects are quoted in writing for design, a sample hat, and production.

What file do I need for embroidery?

A vector file (AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF) is best, but a clear high resolution image works. Finished art isn't required for hat projects, since designing the art is part of the work.

What's the difference between an embroidered hat and a patch hat?

An embroidered hat has the design stitched directly into the hat. A patch hat has the design made as a separate patch that is sewn on. Bold, detailed, or multi color designs often look better as a patch.
